US military pact may isolate Colombia…

Oppositions grow over a US plan to beef up its military presence in Colombia, pushing the Latin American nation on the verge of isolation.

Washington’s decision to increase its military presence and open military bases in the country came after Ecuadorian President decided not to renew a lease agreement which would allow US forces to remain in Manta military base.

Brazil and Chile joined Leftist leaders in criticizing the US decision which can boost its military leverage in Latin America.

But the US says the planned military surge is aimed to help Bogota combat drug-fueled violence. Under the plan, the number of American troops in Colombia will top 300 but will not exceed 800, the maximum permitted under an existing military pact.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s expressed opposition against “the idea of an American base in the region.”
