NATO: Airstrike kills 8 Afghan civilians…

KABUL – The NATO-led force says an airstrike by one of its warplanes has killed eight civilians in southern Afghanistan.

The military alliance says in a Wednesday statement the air raid was launched following a clash with a group of 25 insurgents in Helmand province.

The statement says the militants used the civilians as human shields during the Tuesday airstrike.

The deaths come at a time of controversy over airstrikes called in by U.S. troops in two villages in western Afghanistan earlier this month.

The Afghan government says as many as 140 civilians died there. A preliminary U.S. investigation, however, says about 30 civilians were killed.
